R104 mil school in PTA unveiled
A state-of-the-art secondary school was unveiled in Nellmapius last Friday.

High-end learning has received a boost with the opening of Nellmapius Secondary School, the first township school that will offer state-of-the art educational facilities.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and infrastructure development MEC Jacob Mamabolo unveiled the school on Friday.
The total cost of the project stands at R104 130 421.60. Mamabolo said it was a worthwhile investment for the future growth of our economy.
“Our pupils will get quality education where they reside, which means they won’t have to drive to town to access these facilities,” said Lesufi.
“Children in this area will no longer have to travel long distances, which will reduce the demand for scholar transport currently offered by the department.”
The school is one of 17 schools the department of infrastructure and development will hand over to the department of education.
“We intend on opening top of the range educational facilities in other townships across the province each month, until 2017,” said acting spokesperson Obed Bodiba.
The school is a modern information technology based facility with a design based on a prototype that incorporates the department of education national schools infrastructure norms and standards.
The school falls in the mega school category due to its size that responds to demand trends encountered across the province.
“The provision of schools with modern facilities in townships will go a long way to improve and transform the quality of education in the townships. It will also change the township economy,” said Lesufi.
The school boasts high-end learning facilities, including 30 smart classrooms, two smart science laboratories, two smart multi-purpose rooms, one computer laboratory, a library, nutrition centre and dining room, courtyards, a guard house, covered walkways, sports facility, a soccer and rugby field, combi courts (to accommodate netball, basketball and tennis courts), refuse yard, pump room and generator room.
The school is also a green school in terms of the following:
– Roof insulation, reducing energy loss from the buildings.
– Glazing that maximises natural light into the building and reduces energy loss from the building.
– Energy saving lighting with LED light fittings.
– Rainwater harvesting and landscaping.
– Insulated walls for heat conservation and soundproofing.
Nellmapius Secondary School has come a long way from sharing the same location with Nellmapius Primary School since 2003 when the school was established.
In 2004, Nellmapius Secondary School relocated to Mamelodi West, occupying the stand that used to be the grounds of M.L. Msezane Primary School.
The new school might also be renamed. It is currently named after Alois Hugo Nellmapius, businessman, industrialist and pioneer conservationist.
