Sport highlights 7-9 October
The coming weekend will be packed with sports action again, both at international and local level.
South African sports fans can again watch their national rugby and cricket teams in action 24 hours from one another this weekend.
South Africa started the ODI series against Australia on a dominant note, but the action in the series is not over yet. On Sunday, the two teams will meet again in the fourth game of the series at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. The final game will be played next week Wednesday at Newlands in Cape Town. Sunday’s game is a day game and the action will start at 10:00, while Wednesday’s game will start at 13:30.
Meanwhile, local cricket lovers can support the Titans this weekend when they play their first game in die Sunfoil four-day provincial series against the Knights at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The game started on Wednesday and is supposed to finish on Saturday.
Although the All Blacks have already won the title in this year’s Rugby Championship, there will still be a lot at stake when they face the Springboks in Durban on Saturday. For the Springboks and the whole of South Africa it will be a huge morale boost. The All Blacks, on the other hand, are aiming for the world record for most victories in succession. They are only two victories away from achieving this.
For those who want to support club rugby in Pretoria, there is action at Loftus Versfeld (B field) when Pretoria Police take on East London Police in the last league fixture of their Gold Cup campaign. This game starts at 15:00 on Saturday.
Bafana Bafana will be in action this weekend in their qualifying game for the next World Cup. They play against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou. The game starts at 20:00 on Saturday.
The Phobians running club presents the Capital Classic Race on Saturday morning. The event consists of a 21,1km half-marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. The first two races start at 06:00 and the fun run will start at 06:15. The race will start and end at the Phobians club in Queens Cresent, Lynnwood. For more information, phone Bert on 082-922-6817.
Netball
The ladies of Tuks went through the league phase of the Varsity Netball tournament undefeated. On Monday night at 19:00 they will take on the Madibaz of the Eastern Cape in the second semi-final. The game will take place in the Rembrandt Hall at the Tuks Sport Campus.
