Health officials suspended

“Of the eighteen, twelve were charged with falsification of records”.

Eighteen officials have been suspended in a bid to curb misconduct in the Gauteng department of health

Spokesperson Patricia Mokoena said: “Of the eighteen, twelve were charged with falsification of records.”

The remainder were charged with participation in an illegal strike, disregarding safety rules, gross negligence fraud and corruption.

Mokoena said positions of the suspended officials ranged from laundry workers to a director. Criminal charges were laid in three of the cases.

MEC Qedani Mahlangu said the department viewed these transgressions in a serious light.

Mahlangu said the lack of integrity fed corruption and tarnished the image of the health department.

“The department cannot allow this. Public healthcare is the only hope for the majority of people who cannot afford private healthcare.”
