Memorial plans for TUT student

“I was with him when the car sped towards us and knocked us over.”

A memorial service for a former Tshwane University of Technology student will be held later this week.

A final-year Information and Communication Technology student, Benjamin Phehla was injured during a protest. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Phehla and seven other students were ran over by a speeding car while taking part in #FeesMustFall protests at TUT‘s Soshanguve north campus on Thursday.

A friend Lawrence Mgidi said: “I was with him (Phlela) when it happened.”

Police confirmed investigations and said a docket of culpable homicide had been opened.

The #Feesmustfall students were reported to have been fleeing from police stun grenades and bullets when they were knocked over by a speeding car.

One of the eight students who were knocked over, Thobela Sibiya, said the group had tried to get out of the way as the car came rushing towards them.

TUT issued a statement shortly after Phehla’s passing saying the university had made counselling services available.
