Robberies on the rise in west
Pretoria West residents are worried after a spate of business robberies this week.
A string of robberies has hit Pretoria West in the past week.
On Monday, three men were caught by CPF members after robbing a spaza shop in Oliewen Avenue, Proclamation Hill.
A neighbour heard a gunshot coming from the shop and alerted the CPF.
CPF members chased after the three robbers and caught them before calling police. An illegal firearm dropped by one of them was found in the street.
Pretoria West police spokesperson Colonel Michelle Toohey said on Thursday the men were still in police custody.
On Tuesday, a furniture store was robbed by six armed men, police spokesperson Captain Thumas Mufamamdi said.
Three of them entered the AB’s Hyper Army Furniture and Appliances store in Buitekant Street in Pretoria West and demanded money.
“While that happened, three other armed men kept watch outside the store,” he said.
“The robbers left with two cellphones, the owner’s ring and an undisclosed amount of money.”
The six fled the scene in a silver Mercedes-Benz C-Class and a white Toyota bakkie after robbery.
They were by Thursday still on the run.

Resident Eric Cordier said on Wednesday there had been a marked increase in robberies in the west, especially at night.
“Last night armed men driving a VW attempted to rob a shop near Charlotte Maxeke Street (Mitchell street), but fled the scene as soon as the alarm went off,” he said.
“This is becoming a problem and I believe those men are connected to the ones who robbed AB’s Hyper Army furniture.”
Colonel Tooley said patrolling teams were still being used in a bid to maintain law and order.
“We are doing our best to keep the community safe.”
