A 14-year-old learner died in hospital on Monday after he was stabbed, allegedly by another learner, in Lotus Gardens last week.
Thato Mabula died in Kalafong hospital.
Department of education spokesperson Oupa Bodile confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
“Investigations indicate the incident happened outside the school premises,” he said.
“It is believed the two got into a fight on their way home [from school] and the one stabbed the other.”
Bodile said police were handling the case and department was offering counselling to the affected people.
“We will provide counselling to the fellow learner involved, teachers and everyone who was affected by the incident,” he said.
According to media reports, Mabula was involved in a fight with the attacker a week before their final encounter, but the school failed to do anything about it.
“As the department, we think the school handled the whole thing poorly from the start,” said Bodile.
“We would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and to the school.”
Police could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
