Registration for Wings for Life World run now open
Registration now open for the popular and unique Wings for Life World run in Centurion next year.
For the fourth year the Wings for Life World Run (WFLWR) returns to South Africa, this time taking place on 7 May in Centurion, Pretoria.
Early bird entries have just opened. Entries are limited to 5 000 people with the first 3 000 receiving a limited-edition Puma running shirt.
The WFLWR is a unique, global sports event that takes place in 24 locations across 23 countries simultaneously, in varying light and weather conditions.
This is the world’s only race that has no finish line.
Instead, a catcher car chases down participants, ending their race as the car overtakes them until one male and one female, World Champions remain.
The no-finish-line allows South Africans of all running abilities to take part.
Some jog for 5km and some use the event to train for the Comrades marathon.
All entry fees globally go to the Wings for Life Foundation, which finances research to improve the treatment and therapy for spinal cord injuries and ultimately, a cure.
Paralympian, Laureus-nominee and WFLWR ambassador Pieter du Preez said: “Many spinal cord injuries are preventable as common causes are road traffic crashes, sports injuries, falls or violence. Unfortunately, it is mostly young South Africans in their prime that are injured in this way.”
“Many people with spinal injuries struggle physically, mentally and spiritually – some never come to terms with their new way of living. This is why better therapies, and eventually a cure, are so important.”
Last year, around 2 300 South Africans joined over 130 000 runners for the third WFLWR, raising about R112 million.
“The WFLWR is the only race that unites able-bodied runners and participants in wheelchairs from around the world for a single cause,” he said.
“I can’t wait to take part again next year.”
