Pretoria Boeremark is home to all
“This is a place where your client becomes your friend.”
The Pretoria Boeremark has become like a home to residents in search of fresh produce on a Saturday morning.
The market is a hive of activity as early as 05:30, with stallholders selling everything from curry, flowers and vegetables to handcrafted artwork.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee and pancakes fill the air as shoppers browse their favourite stalls.

The market has been operating for 26 years, and moved to its current location, the Pioneer museum, in 2004.
“This is a place where your client becomes your friend,” said stallholder André Havenga.
He said the camaraderie between the patrons and the sellers was gladdening.
“You hardly hear a cellphone ring or see anyone busy with a cellphone. People talk to each other.”
Market manager Johan van Wyk said the culture of togetherness the market created needed to be preserved, despite fears the market would have to relocate.

He said the Boeremark received a letter from its lessor earlier in April, giving them notice to find new grounds.
“How am I just going to pack up? I need to take care of 240 exhibitors,” said Van Wyk.
“There is no way we can just move in three weeks’ time. Another agreement needs to be tabled.”
