The LDM’s executive head, Iberaheem Docarat said over 350 blankets were donated on Monday morning thanks to a team of 100 volunteers.

“On Freedom Day, the Laudium Disaster Management distributed 50 blankets to the Ladies from Laudium Care Services for the Aged (LCSA) in Whiteblocks, Laudium. Another 50 was distributed to a church in Eersterust and 50 more to less fortunate people in the Pretoria area,” he said.

Docarat said the initiative aimed to keep the less privileged warmer this coming winter.

“The cold breeze makes us want to curl up under a blanket and sleep, but for the many without a blanket, it is a nightmare as they struggle with the shivers. On Monday, we distributed 350 blankets to orphanages and homes for the elderly in the Atteridgeville area to help cope with the onset of winter,” he said.

Docarat said the LDM team collects money from the community around February each year to make the blanket drive a possibility.

“We have limited resources, it would be great if we could help everybody who is in need.”

Docarat said more initiatives were planned for June and July.

“We’ll again raise money and if the community can keep helping this initiative, we will donate more blankets to the needy. Our focus is to help as many people as possible, so we try not to give to the same homes every time,” he said.

The homes we visited where Minnie Angels, Babyhouse and a pre-school for children with disabilities among others.

Docarat thanked the community who supported the initiative to be a success.

The above was made possible by the generous donations received form the Laudium community, he said.
