Fatigue kicks in for Downs’ players

Some of Downs' key players are expected to feature for Bafana against Nigeria this weekend.

Mamelodi Sundowns have not had it easy in this year’s CAF competition.

The men from Pretoria are third in group C, with 4 points from three games following their 2-1 loss against Esperance last week.

Sundowns did not have a pre-season last year and despite that, they went on to win the CAF Champions League title in October after defeating Zamalek of Egypt

Since their famous triumph, the Brazilians have enjoyed mixed fortunes in the recently concluded domestic league.

They finished second and without further silverware following a busy schedule which saw them play more than 50 games. Their current run in this year’s CAF competition is not impressive, having been held to a draw by St George in their opening fixture at home.

Coach Pitso Mosimane lamented the spectre of fatigue and injuries in his team in the past few months.

“It is a little bit difficult and unfortunate that we can’t put a full strength team to play. I think you could see I can play Thapelo Morena as the striker and that is the best I can do because if you look at the bench, there’s nobody who can play… and we don’t even make 18 players on the bench,” he told Kickoff magazine.

With their next game 18 days away, Mosimane said the two weeks resting period would probably bring one or two players to full fitness.

Adding to Mosimane’s stress is that some of his key players are expected to feature for Bafana Bafana’s against Nigeria in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

Percy Tau, Hlompho Kekana and Tebogo Langerman have been selected for national duty.
