A riot between inmates and prison officials broke out at Kgosi Mampuru II correctional centre on Sunday.

“According to initial reports, offenders were refusing to go into their cells. They were requested repeatedly to return to their cells, but refused to do so,” said department of correctional services spokesperson Ofentse Morwane.

“The inmates then started attacking officials and in the process one official and one offender sustained slight injuries.”

Morwane said minimum force was utilised to restore order and the centre was now back to normal.
