Metro vows sustained action against disorder in hotspot areas

Officials say regular enforcement operations will continue as part of efforts to promote safer, cleaner and better-managed communities across the metro.

Led by members of the TMPD and other Tshwane metro official businesses, various locations inside Sunnyside were subjected to compliance checks this past weekend.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture, Obakeng Ramabodu, who was at the operation in the CBD on May 29, said that creating safe, clean, and well-managed communities remains a priority for the city.

The by-law enforcement operation was conducted across Pretoria CBD, Lynnwood, and Sunnyside.

The operation focused on addressing by-law violations, promoting compliance, and strengthening public safety in some of the city’s busiest areas.

Ramabodu says that as part of the operation, stop-and-search activities were conducted to deter criminal activity, prevent lawlessness, and ensure that residents, commuters and businesses can enjoy public spaces without fear or disruption.

One of the stops during the nighttime operation was on Minnaar Street. A popular inner-city spot of street vendors, late-night socialising, public drinking, and, as alleged by Ramabodu, lawlessness as well.

“The lawlessness that is happening on Minnaar must come to an end. We are here to stop it. We’re not fighting anyone; we’ve told all of them to get into their cars, stop drinking publicly, and stop the lawlessness that is ongoing here.

“There are several crimes reported during this month and even last month because of the lawlessness that is happening on Minaar Street in the CBD. We are here to stop the lawlessness, we’re not here to fight anyone, the metro police are here to enforce by-laws.

“We want all the residents around the CBD and Minaar to stop what they’re doing because we can’t have a lawless city. We must have a city that respects by-laws, and that is clean and safe. We will continue being on the ground,” Ramabodu said.

The MMC also said that the area is home to student residences, requiring residents to behave more thoughtfully. He says that the city spends millions cleaning the area, only for weekends to be marked with littering, public urination, reckless driving, noise pollution, and other public disturbances.

“They want to create the impression that this City is leaderless and it has no laws, and we’re not going to tolerate that. We are here conducting an operation that is going to be consistent,” Ramabodu said.

The stakeholders also made stops on Greef Street in Sunnyside and visited a popular nightclub in the CBD, among other locations, during the operation.
