About 35 water meters have been stolen in Villieria, Kilner Park and Queenswood in August alone.

Water meter theft in the Moot has escalated since the start of August and the residents are pleading with the police to put a stop to it.

She said residents found it difficult to spot the thieves because they usually struck in the early hours of the morning.

“They operate between 03:00 and 07:00 when it’s very dark and a lot of people are asleep.

Residents say these guys are quick, which makes it difficult to spot them or even chase after them.

There has always been a problem with water meter theft, however, this month it is at its worst. We plead with our officers to help us arrest these people.”

Van der Kooi said the meters were stolen for the copper inside.
