Hammanskraal school a recycling champion

The Enterprise Development Award was awarded to waste collectors from Hammanskraal, Netwaste.

A Hammanskraal school recently won an award for collecting 16.6 tons of plastic soft drink bottles for recycling.

Motjibosane primary school was the top PET (polyethylene terephtalate) collectors at an annual recycling competition for schools.

PET is the clear plastic used to make water and soft drink bottles.

The school also came in overall third in their category.

The award ceremony was recently held in Johannesburg, rewarding learners from across the country for their efforts in eradicating waste in their communities.

School’s principal Henrietta Mogolane said: “I was so excited about our efforts being rewarded.”

After failing to achieve their aims in the previous year’s competition, they set out to do things differently at the beginning of the year, Mogolane told Rekord.

Hammanskraal resident Martin Rampyapedi was also recognised at the awards for mobilising and encouraging the schools under his portfolio.

The enterprise development award was awarded to waste collectors from Hammanskraal Net Waste.

The sponsors were also happy.

“I am very proud of all the schools that were part of this year’s programme,” says Unathi Mbanya, a corporate social investment specialist at CCBSA (Coca-Cola Beverages SA), which sponsored the event.

“We have seen learners go out of their way to win this year’s competition. They have done their bit to help with waste management in Tshwane.”

Ekuthuleni primary school won first prize and Siphosethu primary school won second prize in their division.

In the high school division, Motherwell High School got the first prize while VM Kwinana secondary school came in second. Tlhatlogang secondary school came third.

The schools recycling programme is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of waste management and recycling.

At the beginning of the year, schools must commit to collecting a minimum of 1 000kg of PET per month. Schools that collect two tons or more can win prizes in addition to the money they make from selling the bottles for recycling.
