Crime stats: Rape and murder up
Police minister Fikile Mbalula said 2.1 million serious crimes were committed from April 2016 to March 2017.
The rate of murder and rape have increased, police minister said during the release of the 2016/17 crime statistics in Parliament today.

The country’s murder rate increased by 1.8%, with Gauteng and the Western Cape recording the highest in that crime category.
In the 2014/2015 crime statistics, murder cases had increased by 4.9%.

Mbalula said in the past 10 years murder rate had gradually declined until 2011/2012 when it started to increase annually.
Police said rape increased by 0.9% increase in the 2016/17 period.
