City conference to offer ‘mind-bending’ solutions

"These mind-bending solutions will help people deal with everyday problems."

Sindi Buthelezi, the founder of one of Pretoria’s hottest clothing labels, Azania Zulu, will be the main speaker at this year’s TEDxPretoria think-tank conference.

The event, to be hosted at the 012Central multi-functional venue for the second time, will have people like Buthelezi sharing stories of their success.

TEDxPretoria’s spokesperson Mbali Makanya said Buthelezi and others who are regarded as thought leaders will reveal “mind-bending” solutions to those attending the conference.

“Talks generally involve three main categories T=technology E=entertainment and D=design,” Makanya said.

The theme for this year’s dialogue is “unapologetic”.

“These mind-bending solutions will help people deal with everyday problems. Those attending will be moved, entertained and inspired by local speakers, performers and artists showcasing ‘ideas worth spreading’,” she said.

Buthelezi’s company specialises in making T-shirts, scarfs, backpacks, bags and hats with the trademark name, Azania Zulu.

“With a deluge of nearly 100 nominations, the final selection of 15 speakers was nothing short of challenging. Kiara Nirghin (17), the 2016 winner of the Google science fair and community impact award for the Middle East and Africa is confirmed to speak as well,” said Makanya.

Nirghin was recently acclaimed as one of the Times and The Guardians top 30 most influential teens in the world for her invention, “No More Thirsty Crops”.

She will share the stage with Adebayo Okeowo, a human rights lawyer who uses technology to advance human rights and social justice issues.

Kwandile Sikhosana, the South African representative at the African Union youth parliament, will talk about youth leadership.

TEDxPretoria will feature thought-provoking talks designed to spread ideas and perspectives, to spark conversation and connections in the community.

The event uses TED’s celebrated format of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances that foster learning, inspiration, and wonder, while also prompting conversations that matter.

TEDx, where x is equal to an independently organised event, originated as a four-day conference in California, in the US, more than 30 years ago as a nonprofit organisation devoted to ideas worth spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today’s leading thinkers and doers.

“Many of these talks are given at TED’s annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com,” Makanya said.

The independently organised event, licensed by TED, will feature these voices, including Mamelodi’s poet Busisiwe Mahlangu who recently won the Tshwane speak out loud poetry competition.

TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan, Isabel Allende and Nigeria’s literature queen Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche.
