The Tshwane police central cluster arrested 47 people for various crimes over the weekend.
Weekend crime prevention operations were conducted in Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Lyttelton, Sunnyside, Silverton, Pretoria Moot and Villieria.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said roadblocks and stop and search and intelligence operations were conducted.
“Arrests made under this category include 16 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, 14 for drug-related offences, two for possession of suspected stolen property and one for possession of car breaking equipment. Other arrests were for reckless and negligent driving, theft and public indecency,” she said.
Weilbach said the intensified police activity was part of the festive season operations which commenced last month and would continue until the end of January next year.
“It’s aimed at ensuring that residents in the cluster are, and feel safe during this time. SAPS students are deployed at shopping centres and malls on certain days for high police visibility and to deter criminals from committing crimes in these places,” she said.

Weilbach said the police would increase visits to liquor outlets during the festive season to ensure they did not serve liquor to minors.
“Alcohol can only be consumed in licensed premises or at an allocated licensed area. It is against the law to consume liquor on pavements or in the street.
Parents must refrain from lending their children vehicles when they know there will be alcohol consumption or if the child is not yet qualified to drive. The SAPS and the metro police already intensified the number of joint roadblocks from now till the end of the festive season. Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs will not be tolerated.”

She said the suspects would appear in the Hatfield Community and Pretoria Magistrate’s courts on Monday.
“Communities are once again urged to report any suspicious persons, vehicles (especially ones without number plates) or circumstances to the police immediately by phoning the 10111 emergency-number. Information with regard to crime or suspicious drug activity can be given to the police anonymously by phoning 08600-10111 or by sending an SMS to 32211,” she said.
“Assist the Gauteng SAPS to fight fraud, corruption, unethical behaviour or any other suspicious activities that could be detrimental to our success by phoning the Gauteng standby provincial duty numbers: Duty General 082-313-8299, Duty Brigadier 082-444-4354.”
