New sinkhole emerges in Centurion

He said there was no estimation yet on repair costs, but further investigations would determine what needs to be done.

Fears have arisen of a new sinkhole forming near a major one already disrupting life in central Centurion. “We have discovered dolomite holes in the area,” councillor David Farquhardson said.

“They tend to move upwards, which could cause new troubles.” The sinkhole on the corner of Jean Avenue and Gerhard Street made its appearance in May this year.

This compelled the closure of a busy route, affecting motorists and businesses in the area.

The metro recently approved a budget of R25 million to fix the hole, and repairs were scheduled to get underway before the end of the month. The new problem was discovered when explorative drilling was done around the existing sinkhole, said Farquhardson.

“The high-risk geological conditions were discovered after drilling investigations were conducted.”

Farquhardson issued a statement saying motorists and pedestrians should be aware of the new development. “Please be aware and communicate that the eastbound left lane of Jean Avenue, after the South Street intersection, just past Ridgeback restaurant, will be barricaded due to the threat.”

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said this was not a sinkhole, but rather low-density soil discovered in the drilling. He said the drilling was not the cause.

“This was rather discovered by the drilling that was done.” He said there was no estimation yet on repair costs, but further investigations would determine what needs to be done. Mashigo said the immediate concern was the public’s safety.

“This is why the metro would like to warn road users to be cautious when driving close to or along these routes.”
