A serial rapist has been jailed for 239 years in Pretoria.

Charles Mthethwa was sentenced by the High Court in Pretoria earlier this month for raping several women at knifepoint.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku welcomed the sentence, saying the crimes were committed in suburbs such as Erasmia, Olifantsfontein and Ivory Park.

“He threatened his victims with a knife and dragged them into bushy areas where he strangled, robbed them of their personal belongings and raped them,” Mfaku said.

He said Mthethwa was linked to the rapes through DNA.

”The accused was facing 24 counts, namely; 8 counts of kidnappings, 10 counts of rape, 5 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder,” he said.

Mfaku said Mthethwa pleaded guilty when he realised the State’s case against him was overwhelming.

“In aggravation of sentence, Advocate Bakedi Maoke argued that the prescribed minimum sentence be imposed in spite of the fact that the accused pleaded guilty,” he said.

He said Maoke argued Mthetwa did not plead guilty because he was remorseful but because he realised he was faced with a watertight case.

Mthethwa, was sentenced to five life imprisonment terms.
