UPDATE: Sosh residents fear more tragedy due to high mast lights

According to Nathaniel Baloyi from Soshanguve Block X, most residents are now afraid to walk near high mast lights.

Residents of Soshanguve fear more tragedy after five children were killed in a high electricity mast accident recently.

“More of these tragedies are imminent in the northern townships unless the metro acts quickly,” they said.

Nathaniel Baloyi of Soshanguve Block X said residents were now afraid to walk near the masts.

He said residents had reported the mast because they feared it exposed them to crime, as it was not working.

Another resident, Alpheus Phosa said since the masts were not working anyway, the metro should remove them all.

“If they fell on a house they will kill even more people,” said Phosa.

But Elsie Diale of Extension 13 said the residents were to blame because it was them who made the illegal and unsafe electricity connections.

“It is like a game of cat and mouse. Every time the police and municipality come to remove the illegally connected wires, they find a way to connect it again,” she said, pointing to a vandalised electricity box.

Recently mayor Solly Msimanga said in a statement the ring had fallen because of “deviant acts of thieving villains”.

“It is unfortunate that this vandalisim of electricity wires has terminated the lives of innocent souls,” said Msimanga.

Eskom has called on residents to respect Eskom property and keep their distance from its installations.

“Making any contact whatsoever with any Eskom property could lead to arrest, injury or death,” Eskom said in a statement.
