Thousands of litres of a raw sewage are spilling into the Hennops river in Centurion.
This shocking discovery was made by ward councillor Peter Sutton on Thursday morning after he was contacted by tenants from a nearby building for help.
“It is absolutely insane and shocking that thousands of litres of sewage had been running freely since last weekend,” said Sutton.
Sutton said he was investigating whether the pollution was as a result of a blockage or work of a local contractor who damaged pipes.
Members of the Tshwane environmental department are investigating.

“Action will be taken if negligence is involved,” Sutton told Rekord.
“This is a massive setback after all the hard work put in to clean the river. Whoever is responsible will be liable to pay a fine.”
Sutton was adamant this would not stop him in his efforts to restore the river.
“I want the whole area to be something the community can be proud of again,” Sutton said.
