Tshwane North police have promised to come down hard on drunk drivers this festive season.
The police sent out the message to motorists this week when they arrested 27 for suspected drunk driving during operation When Duty Calls.
“We will come down hard on those behaving recklessly on the roads and make sure that offenders are jailed for longer periods,” said police spokesperson Matthews Nkoadi.
The police are working with the Tshwane metro police, Gauteng traffic department as well as the national transport and justice departments to ensure those arrested for drunk driving, speeding and driving unroadworthy vehicles are kept in jail.
“We will also be going to court to oppose bail applications to make sure that these people stay in jail,” he added.

Nkoadi said the operation included raids, roadblocks and stop and searches.
In total, 82 persons were arrested during the operation for offences including possession of stolen motor vehicles, theft, rape, attempted carjacking to driving a motor vehicle without a licence, dealing in liquor and assault among others.
“All suspects will appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court soon, while the illegal immigrants will be deported.”
The police also called on residents to report any police misconduct and criminal activity to the provincial duty brigadier on 082-313-8299 or provincial duty general on 082-444-4354 at any time.
