A man was arrested last Thursday for assaulting a woman in Sunnyside.
He also destroyed the woman’s simcard by chewing it.
Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the incident occurred at midnight in one of the flats in Sunnyside.
Mavimbela said reports from the scene indicated the 28-year-old man took the woman’s phone, removed the simcard then chewed it without being provoked.
“He reportedly went on to punch the victim in the face before other flatmates could intervene,” Mavimbela said.
He said the police arrived on the scene shortly after the attack and arrested the man.
“Though the victim was treated for bruises on the face, neck and arm, she later expressed her desire through a sworn statement, that she no longer wished to testify against her alleged attacker following discussions between their families,” he said.

Mavimbela said the police and a state prosecutor had decided to refer them to alternative dispute resolution avenues.
“Though the accused appears as if he had been granted a lifeline, the police are going to call for the accused to [be] placed in a life skills and anger management programme,” Mavimbela said.
He said the attacker was released on R500 bail and the case was postponed to 23 January.
“Among his bail condition, the accused was ordered not to assault or threaten the victim. He was ordered not to use any vulgar language against the victim,” he said.
Mavimbela said the man would be taken into police custody if he contravened any of his bail conditions.
“Victims of domestic violence and other crimes against women and children, are urged to contact the local police station without delay,” Mavimbela said.
