A 31-year-old Nellmapius spaza shop owner was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly fired at Silverton police last Thursday.
Police officers on patrol spotted two suspicious vehicles parked in front of a spaza shop in Saamroep Street in Nellmapius Extension 4.
Suspecting a robbery was in progress, two officers approached the spaza shop to investigate when somebody from inside the shop fired at them.
Inside the shop, the police found three men.
“Apparently the shop had recently been targeted by criminals,” said police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.
“A search of the premises uncovered a 9mm pistol that were reported stolen in Sunnyside in 2014.”

The owner of the spaza shop was arrested and appeared in Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
The same officers also arrested two men for robbery committed in Mamelodi on Monday.
After receiving a tip-off about the vehicle used in the robbery, the police spotted the vehicle and gave chase.
The suspects lost control of their vehicle at the corner of Solomon Mahlangu and Old Bronkhorstspruit roads.
Two suspects aged 32 and 35 years old were arrested.

Following a search of the vehicle, two unlicensed firearms, ammunition and a large amount of cash were also found.
It was later discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen in Tembisa after a hijacking.
Forensic and ballistic tests will be conducted on the firearms to determine if they were used in any crime.
Silverton police station commander Colonel Karel Swanepoel commended the officers for their continuous good work and service to the community.
He warned that the full extent of power of the law would unleashed to bring criminals to justice.
