East security officer stabbed in face

When the man ignored the warning shot, the officer shot him in the upper arm.

SAPS Brooklyn has opened an attempted murder case after a security officer was stabbed in the face.

The incident happened on Friday, 1 December during an evening crime prevention operation between the SAPS, various private security firms and the CPF, said SAPS spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.

At about 19:00 the police and security officers were following up on information about possible drug usage and public drinking in Waterkloof Ridge.

“A group of men were sitting in an open field. One of the men stormed at the police and security officers as they were approaching the group,” said Weilbach.

The man had a bottle in his hand and tried to hit one of the security officers.  After a struggle, the officer was stabbed in the face with the bottle.

“The suspect kept on attacking but the officer, who remained calm and focused, reacted by firing a warning shot.”

“When the man ignored the warning shot, the officer shot him in the upper arm. The 27-year-old suspect was immediately arrested for attempted murder.”

Brooklyn SAPS commander, Colonel Terrence Naidoo commended the officer for his bravery and wished him a speedy recovery.

The officer received medical treatment and nine stitches under the left eye.

“Crime hot spot areas were identified where there are a high number of property-related crimes, robberies and drug-related crimes.”

“During the operation, two suspects were arrested for possession of dagga. Five were arrested for drinking in public and two were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

Fines to the total of R5 000 were issued to liquor premises that do not adhere to requirements of the Liquor Act.

More than 300 litres of alcohol were confiscated in Lynnwood Glen at an illegal shebeen in a park.

Weilbach said other arrests that were made during the weekend included two for robbery at a liquor store in Waterkloof Ridge, two for attempted robbery and assault in Ashlea Gardens

There were also arrests for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and shoplifting.
