At least 20 suspects were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning when police carried out a raid for illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition in Mamelodi East.
Spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe said the operation, named Back to Basics, aimed at making the festive season safer for residents.
“A formidable team of units including the tactical response team, K9, public order police, Tshwane metro police and the flying squad, executed the operation,” said Mbewe.
“In one of the taverns searched at 14th section, police found a suspect in possession of nyaope and dagga sticks,” said Mbewe.
Other suspects were arrested for attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of housebreaking equipment, assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm, theft and common robbery.

Police suspected that in once instance, surveillance equipment had been used to detect their movements. The suspects tried to evade capture, but were no match for the police.
The arrested suspects, aged between 21 and 47, are expected to appear in court soon.
Mbewe said police operations will continue throughout the festive season at malls and elsewhere until after the holidays.
He said members of the public must report any crime to the police at 08600 10111.
