A Nellmapius woman has spent more than a year with a big uncovered manhole in her front yard.
Melita Seloane, an RDP housing beneficiary, said since she moved into the house, her children had not visited her because of the stinky sewer.
She said builders had dug up two big sewage holes in the yard of her Nellmapius Extension 22 home, one in front and the other at the back.
“I am embarrassed to invite people to visit me,” she said.
Seloane said after months of raising a stink about the manholes, the Tshwane sent contractors to close the manholes.
“I thought that was the end of my problems, and I was preparing to finally enjoy Christmas with family and friends at my house when contractors returned on Saturday to dig an even bigger manhole outside my front door,” she said.
“Again they left without closing this one too.”

Seloane said she was worried because she has spent 14 months fighting for the previous two to be closed.
“I asked them when they would close it and they would not answer.
It is not safe for my grandchildren to visit me here.
A child who falls into the hole, could wash away and drown.
I was so excited when I received the news that I had been given an RDP house but now I feel trapped…unable to show my friends where I live.”

Seloane said she had discussed her problem with local councillor Joel Masilela.
“Nothing has come of that.”
Seloane said she wanted to grow vegetables in her yard but could not because of the hole.
Gauteng department of human settlement construction project manager Tella Ludidi said according to her records the problem had been resolved.
She said the department would investigate then “revert back to you”.
