Mob justice incidents becoming a norm in the West

Over 10 people have been killed by mobs this year alone in the west of Pretoria.

The body of an unknown man was found in Jeffsville, west of Pretoria on Wednesday night.

Following the recent spate of mob justice incidents in the area, Atteridgeville police issued a warning that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

It is alleged the man was necklaced and pummelled with rocks before succumbing to his injuries.

Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said no arrests were made.

“We again plead with the community to never take the law into their own hands. Allow police to investigate and make arrests.”

Some residents believe that the reason crime is escalating is because police have done little to protect citizens, especially in informal settlements.

Mufamadi, however, said that at times the community lacked patience and wanted justice done without any proof of wrongdoing.

“If community members don’t get any satisfaction from station management, they need to escalate their concerns to the cluster commander. There’s no need for them to kill or hurt because at times innocent people get killed,” he said.

This year alone, more than 10 people have been killed in “mob justice” incidents in the west of Pretoria.

In May, a 22-year-old man was burnt alive at the Phomolong taxi rank in Maunde Street.

Weeks before, two men, including an 18-year-old, were burnt to death during another incident in Atteridgeville.

Last month, a man was stoned to death at Itereleng informal settlement near Laudium.

The victim was accused of breaking into several shacks in the area.
