An alleged cable thief was caught in a flower bed early this morning where he was trying to hide from police security officers after he tried to steal electric cables in Lynnwood.
SAPS spokesperson, Colette Weilbach said this happened about 03:30 when a CSI reaction officer was on patrol and an Investec security officer stopped him and asked for assistance after he heard noises from a service room inside the KPMG building in Lynnwood.
“When the reaction officer approached the door of the building to investigate, an unknown man exited the building and attacked him by hitting him in the face with an unknown object. The security guard then fired a warning shot and the suspect fled.”
The SAPS Brooklyn was called out to the scene and it was discovered that the man attempted to steal electrical cables from a service room.

“The CSI reaction officer sustained a head injury and was treated on the scene before he was transported to a local hospital.”
“While investigations continued, colleagues of the injured security guard discovered the suspect’s hiding place in a nearby flower bed.”
The 40-year-old man from Mamelodi was handed over to the Brooklyn SAPS who arrested him for malicious damage to property.
Weilbach said additional charges would be later added when the injured security officer lays charges against him
Brooklyn SAPS acting station commander, Colonel Terrence Naidoo commended the collective effort between the SAPS and private security firm reaction officers that led to the arrest of the alleged cable thief.
