The Centurion taxi association is mourning the loss of chairperson John Mashaba, who was gunned down on 1 December in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga.
Mashaba, who had been working in Centurion for a number of years, often travelled to his hometown to spend weekends with his family.
His colleagues at the taxi association are saddened by his sudden death and described Mashaba as a peaceful person and a leader.
Acting chairperson Thabo Rabothata said although Mashaba had only been the chairperson for 18 months, people respected him for his kindness since he started working there as a driver.
“He came to the Centurion taxi rank many years ago and started working as a driver before he became an owner,” said Rabothata.
He said Mashaba was elected as the vice-chairperson six years ago until last year when he was elected to leadership.
Rabothata said the taxi rank will never be the same. “People respected him.

“He was very hardworking and religious. He always preached about peace and people listened to him.”
The Lyttelton police station commander Colonel Daniel Phogole said the community had lost a very good man.
“We used to attend meetings together. Mashaba was very down to earth and always conducted himself in a respectful manner,” said Phogole.
Mashaba was laid to rest last Saturday in Mpumalanga.
The KwaMhlanga police spokesperson was on Wednesday yet to respond to Mashaba’s killing.
