The Pretoria Central police have warned residents to avoid crime hotspots in the area this festive season.
Spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe advised people to remain observant as crime increased during this season.
“Theft out of a motor vehicle, common robberies, bogus salespersons and bogus prophets are among some of our most common crimes in Pretoria Central.”
Selepe especially warned women responsible for the safekeeping of stokvel money.
“We urge stokvel clubs to ask for advice from the bank to transfer money electronically rather than carrying large sums of money and be robbed.”
Selepe said smash and grabbers preyed on unsuspecting drivers at traffic lights, parking lots and stop streets.
“Criminal usually target drivers who are alone, especially women.”
Streets that are usually targeted are Thabo Sehume and Madiba, Steve Biko, Bosman and Nana Sita, Sophie de Bruyn, Nelson Mandela Drive and Eeufees Road near Fountains Valley.”

Selepe gave motorists the following tips:
– Keep car doors locked and windows closed especially in congested areas and near taxi ranks or where the traffic is moving slowly.
– Avoid using a cell phone or any other gadget when walking in the streets as these attract criminals.
– Park your car in a protected and well-lit parking area.
– Beware of people standing at traffic lights, don’t open your windows to accept pamphlets and buy from the vendors.
– Men need be vigilant of easy women at the nightclubs, they are not out there seeking entertainment or love but rather to drug and rob you of all valuables including car.
– Beware of bogus prophets.
