Motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol can expect to spend their Christmas behind bars, police have warned.
Spokesperson for the Kameeldrift police Sergeant Portia Maleka said law enforcement will be particularly watchful on the roads this festive season.
She said roadblocks had already been set up on various roads.
“It’s this time of the year when more people tend to abuse alcohol and end up committing crimes and putting other road users’ lives at risk,” said Maleka.

“We urge people not to take that chance to drive after they’ve been out drinking.
“Rather stay where you are until you’ve sobered up or make alternative transport arrangements.”
Research by Arrive Alive between March 2015 and March 2016 indicates that 50% of the people who lose their lives on South African roads have an alcohol concentration of about 0.5g per 100ml of blood.
According to the SA Medical Research Council, about 9 905 people die every year in SA due to driving under the influence.
“It is our mandate to keep our community safe,” said Maleka.
“It will bring joy to us to see that everyone arrives alive at their destinations. We wish our community a safe Christmas and happy New Year.”
