The Mamelodi police are concerned about the growing number of rapes reported in the area during the festive season.
Alcohol often played a large role in these cases, according to police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe.
Many reports were of incidents that occurred at liquor outlets and involved people who knew each other beforehand.
“The community must be careful of social media chats because many people, especially women, talk to people they don’t know and after meeting them at taverns fall victim to rape,” said Mbewe.
“Don’t go to any tavern or pub if you don’t have money to entertain yourself because there are strangers who will buy you liquor then expect to sleep with you afterwards.”
He said the police also did the rounds at Mahube and Denlyn malls recently to teach residents safety tricks.

He said they advised them to always keep their handbags safe and closed at all the times.
“Never allow strangers to carry your handbag or help you make an ATM cash withdrawal.”
“Don’t compromise the safety of your bank account by giving your bankcard pin to anyone. Rather swipe your card instead of making a cash withdrawal to make purchases.”
– Never leave your child unattended in a shopping trolley.
– Always accompany your child to the toilet and hold your child’s hand at all times.
– Teach your children never to talk to strangers.
– Never leave your child alone in a locked car.
