Three men appeared in court after they were caught by police while breaking into a parked car in Sunnyside – this while the owner was having transactional sex.
The three men broke into a vehicle whose owner had gone into the once notorious Tambotie block or flats on Thursday morning, where he was reportedly having transactional sex with a woman he met in the streets of Sunnyside.
The trio – aged between 21 and 38 – were remanded in custody and are expected back in court next Friday, said police spokesperson Captain Mavimbela.
“They are facing charges of attempted theft out of a motor vehicle and possession of a dangerous weapon since one of the suspects allegedly tried to stab an arresting officer with a sharp object,” said Mavimbela.

Police patrolling on foot noticed the victim get out of his Renault 9 TL after he had parked outside the once notorious, massive Tambotie block of flats.
Shortly thereafter, the three men appeared out of nowhere and smashed one of the vehicle’s windows and one of the suspects got into the car.
Mavimbela said it was only about nine hours later that the police were able to locate the car’s owner inside one of the flats – in that time the vehicle was left unattended out on the pavement on Leyds Street.
It only later emerged that the victim had reportedly gone into the Tambotie flats following an agreement to have a transactional sex with the woman.
“We need to highlight that there are still individuals who continue to disregard their own personal safety,” said Mavimbela. “It would seem that the only way we could guarantee the safety of such persons would be if we were to deploy at least two police officers to stay with them for 24 hours a day.”
