Working ‘around the clock’ to fix Centurion power problems

A planned maintenance programme will unfortunately mean scheduled electricity interruptions.

Maintenance teams have been working “around the clock” since last week to fix power problems in the Raslouw and Monavoni areas in Centurion.

“They would continue to do so until the outages are resolved,” said Tshwane MMC for shared services Cilliers Brink.

The areas have been plagued by rolling electricity outages since December last year.

“On Monday I received a comprehensive technical briefing of the progress made during the weekend by senior electricity officials,” said Brink.

The problem apparently lies with faults experienced at the Raslouw substation and its feeder cables over the past few months, he said.

“To stabilise electricity supply in the area will require capital and operational expenditure, which must be carefully planned,” he said.

An action plan and timeline will be made public once finalised.

In the meantime, an intensive overhead line maintenance and tree pruning programme will kick off on Monday, 19 February. This is expected to take five weeks.

“The maintenance programme will involve scheduled interruptions that will be communicated to the public in advance. Sadly, cable theft in Raslouw compounds the problem of electricity outages,” said Brink.

“Constantly replacing cables depletes our maintenance and repair budget,” he said.

Brink said CPFs were crucial in the fight against cable theft.
