VIDEO: Eersterust retirement home denies neglect accusations

"I carry the elderly very close to my heart and accusations such as these devastated me."

An Eersterust old age home has denied accusations of abuse and neglect at the home.

Accusations that elderly residents at the Lodewyk P Spies home are being abused and neglected surfaced on social media earlier this week. This is after a Facebook photo of an elderly man lying on the floor at the home went viral.

However, manager of the home, Abraham Damons denied these accusations.

“Somebody, and we believe it to be a staff member, took the elderly man from the bed, placed him on the floor and took the picture which went viral,” he said.

Damons was speaking during an oversight visit to the home by the DA Taemane constituency head Adriana Randall from the Gauteng legislature on Wednesday.

Other accusations made on social media included appalling living conditions at the home, abuse of residents, as well mismanagement of funds and maladministration.

It was also alleged that management is using the home’s transportation for personal use.

“I carry the elderly very close to my heart and accusations such as these devastate me,” said Randall.

“The manager of the home denied the accusations made towards the home,” she said.

“After he invited us for a tour of the facility, we saw that the accusations were untrue.”
