The sinkhole was discovered on 17 May last year and after months of planning the metro appointed a contractor who started repairs on 11 January.

Mayoral spokesperson Sam Mgobzi said the repairs would involve five phases. These included repairing of the sinkhole and subsidence, improving the area by means of grouting, rebuilding the intersection and roadway beyond the intersection and upgrading wet services.

Mgobozi confirmed the sinkhole would be repaired within the six month period as announced earlier this year.

The metro recently found itself in a legal tussle with business owners upset over delays in repairing the hole.

Lawyer Jacques Classen said the metro failed to submit a report to the court registrar assigned upon agreement by the metro’s legal team and the municipal manager.

Mgobozi, however, said this week a progress report was filed with the High Court in Pretoria on 15 February.
