UPDATE: North lion attack probe at ‘sensitive stage’ – cops

The woman was accompanying her friend to conduct an interview for an assignment when the lion attacked the pair.

Cullinan police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a 22-year-old woman after she was mauled near Hammanskraal.

The woman was accompanying her friend to conduct an interview for an assignment at the Kevin Richardson’s Wildlife Sanctuary about 10 days ago when the lion attacked the pair as they were approaching their car to leave.

Police spokesperson Constable Connie Mohanedi said an inquest docket was opened, but would not give much information “as the investigation is at a “sensitive stage”.

It is believed that the woman’s name was Megan van der Zwan, a former student at the University of Pretoria.

The University of Pretoria‘s choir, Tuks Camerata paid tribute to her during a funeral service on Wednesday at the Hatfield Christian church.

Rekord tried to contact the family to no avail.

The church has since asked that the family be afforded privacy during this difficult time.

Richardson’s Wildlife Sanctuary  wrote on it`s Facebook page: “We want to ensure that everyone understands that the young women involved in the incident are in no way to blame. Obviously being out in the open in any Reserve carries personal risk, however, we do not believe they were irresponsible in any way,”
