Community unites to restore Jackson van Zyl Park

Residents and volunteers collaborated to clean and restore a local park, demonstrating the role of collective action in improving neighbourhood environments.

A strong sense of community spirit was on display in Tileba, north of Pretoria, during a clean-up operation.

The operation was organised by AfriForum Noord van die Berg (North of the mountain), Ward councillor Mickey van der Westhuizen, and volunteers. They tackled a large-scale clean-up operation at Jackson van Zyl Park.

What started as a routine clean-up quickly turned into a far more demanding project, as teams were met with unforeseen challenges that made the task longer and more difficult than initially anticipated.

Overgrown vegetation, accumulated waste and neglected areas required extra time, effort and co-ordination from everyone involved.

Despite the setbacks, the team remained committed to restoring the park to a clean and safe environment for residents.

AfriForum Noord van die Berg confirmed that their neighbourhood team will return to complete the final phase of the clean-up.

“We believe in delivering quality work and making a lasting impact. We will not leave any task half-done.

“This park is an important space for the community, and we want to ensure it is properly restored for everyone to enjoy,” said the organisation.

The clean-up forms part of AfriForum’s broader community-driven initiatives aimed at maintaining and improving public spaces.

The organisation emphasised that such efforts would not be possible without the continued support of members, sponsors and volunteers.

Residents living near the park welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude for the visible difference already made.

“It’s been a long time since we have seen the park looking this good. We used to avoid it because it was dirty and unsafe, but now there’s hope that our children can play here again,” said Nicole Jackson, who lives near Hillside Manor.

“This shows what can happen when people come together. We can’t always wait for the government. If we work together like this, we can take back our spaces and make them better for everyone.”

The clean-up also served as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in maintaining public areas, particularly when resources are limited.

The organisation believes community partnerships can play a crucial role in bridging the gap.

AfriForum Noord van die Berg encouraged more residents to get involved in future initiatives, stressing that collective action is key to creating safer and cleaner neighbourhoods.
