VIDEO: Lyttelton police station opens new charge offices

“The bruised and battered; victims of crimes like rape; business and house robbery; hijacking and any that you can think of; their first contact with any police station happens inside the client service centre.”

The Lyttelton police station in Centurion reopened its client service centre last week Friday.

Residents must now use the entrance at the corner of Basden Avenue and Gerhard Street to report crimes, submit affidavits or have documents certified at the station.

This upgraded centre is now where the original charge offices used to be several years ago.

The reconstruction came after a large sinkhole was discovered and the offices had to be moved elsewhere on the premises.

“It has been a long wait, but the reopening would definitely improve service delivery,” police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller told Rekord.

The reopening ceremony was attended by Centurion ward councillors David Farquharson, Peter Sutton and Johan van Buuren.

“This newly refurbished client service centre should instil in us a new sense of determination towards improving the service rendered to the public,” said cluster commander Major General Y Botsheleng at the reopening.

She called the service centre the “face” of the police station.

“The bruised and battered; victims of crimes like rape; business and house robbery; hijacking and any that you can think of; their first contact with any police station happens inside the client service centre.”

Botsheleng stressed that it is not a privilege but a right for members of the public to be served with impartiality, dignity and respect.

“Under no circumstances should our clients suffer prejudice because of their race, gender, religious beliefs or political affiliation.

“As the senior officer charged with overseeing the seven police stations of the Tshwane central cluster, I would like to remind the officers in the police station that it is unacceptable for clients who contact the station by telephone to be sent from pillar to post.”

She said the hard work by police officers should not be overlooked.

“One would be making a grave mistake by not highlighting the contributions made by the officers in this police station as they endeavour to make Tshwane central to be among the best-performing clusters in Gauteng.”

Botsheleng said the Lyttelton police station was situated in one of the most upmarket areas in the Tshwane regions, adding that the police were aware of the many people moving into the area for employment and business opportunities.

“Others seek accommodation, shopping and studying. Unfortunately, the existence of these opportunities also attract groups and individuals of an undesirable nature through criminal activities.”

She told the police officers present: “As you serve in your new client service centre, remember that nothing beats knowing you were there to help others when they needed you the most.”
