Councillor collects books for Moot school

“Our school used to be an Afrikaans medium school and has become English over the years.”

A local Moot ward councillor has made it her mission to raise funds or gather more English books for a local school.

DA ward councillor Juanita du Plooy is asking community libraries across Pretoria, as well as all residents to help collect English books for the Eben Swemmer primary school library.

In a letter to Du Plooy, the secretary of the school governing body, Tania Stapelberg wrote: “Our school used to be an Afrikaans medium school and has become English over the years.

Unfortunately, the books in the media centre are in Afrikaans, so our learners are not reading enough.”

Stapelberg said many of the learners were from Mamelodi and it was difficult for them to get to their community libraries.

She said she hoped that community libraries with excess stock or books they wanted to get rid of could donate to the school.

“I have started asking for donations from friends and family as well as buying second-hand books but it is going slowly.

Not being fluent in English could have a negative impact on their school careers – from not being able to read questions in exams properly to taking longer to study and absorb the information.”

Du Plooy said the community could not allow “the education of our children to lag behind due to a shortage of books”.

“We need everyone who can possibly assist to get in contact with Stapelberg and get books to these children.”
