ATM issued me counterfeit money, claims north woman
“A case of fraud is being investigated, the alleged fake notes have been referred to forensics for further investigation,” police said.
A Soshanguve woman has allegedly been left with fake counterfeit notes after she withdrew money from an ATM.
Grace Sebola of extension 1 went to an ATM at a popular shopping centre to withdraw money, but later realised that the notes were fake.
“I went to the ATM at around 13:57 on Wednesday, 4 April. I withdrew R1 500. After collecting the money, I went straight to my home in extension 1,” Sebola said.
She said she did not use the money until two days later on Friday, 6 April.

“It was only when I went to the same complex on 6 April to pay for my DSTV I realised that the money was fake. I took out a R200 note to pay for my R157 DSTV subscription. The lady at the outlet told me that the notes I had were actually fake.”
Sebola took the money to the Nedbank branch at the complex where bank officials checked the notes and asked to see the withdrawal slip. They then referred her to the police to open a case, which she did.
Police spokesperson Constable Zanele Mtsweni confirmed that a case had been opened.
“A case of fraud is being investigated, the alleged fake notes have been referred to forensics for further investigation,” said Mtsweni.
Sebola said she felt that she had been “robbed” by the bank and planned to go to the highest level to ensure that a proper investigation was carried out.
“The bank must explain how the fake money ended up in the ATM,” she said.
The bank’s branch manager Margaret Ikgopoleng said on Tuesday she was aware of the case.

“The matter has been escalated to head office and we are still waiting for feedback,” Ikgopoleng said.
