Metro police, property company clean CBD streets after protest

A private management agent company and members of the Tshwane metro police cleaned up behind littering striking municipal workers in the Pretoria CBD on Friday.

Chaos erupted when members of the SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) flooded the streets of Pretoria to deliver their memorandum of demands to the metro.

Several marchers were spotted emptying garbage bins in the streets, which led to the obstruction of services in the CBD, according to police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.

Six people aged between 30 and 45 years were arrested during the march and charged with public violence, she said.

Hours after the march, management agent City Property – along with Tshwane metro police – helped clean up the streets.

“As a company who proudly operates in the inner city, we decided to play our small part and helped cleaning the streets,” City Property said in a statement.

“We understand the importance of living, working and playing in a city that is clean and safe.”

The cleaning operation carried on into the night, according to City Property director Jeffrey Wapnick.

“We have spearheaded various cleaning initiatives in the city, one of which enables a cleaning company to clean the city at night.”
