Land grabs, riots ‘memo’ baffles police

“These groups want retaliation and war, please do not give it to them.”

A purported memorandum with a police logo has been circulating on social media warning of impending “land grabs and riots” in Pretoria and other major cities.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said authorities have been getting inquiries about the memo.

“We are not aware of this letter circulating around social media. We cannot confirm its authenticity, but we are looking into it,” he said.

The “intelligence” which appears to be directed at police and dated 17 May, said that there would be land grabs and riots from Wednesday.

“Main focus of this terror will be in Johannesburg, Pretoria and the rest of the country.

“Many highways and roads will be blocked off, so make sure you have the basics at home and that you are well prepared,” the purported intelligence claimed.

The memo said the riots would continue until next Wednesday.

In the memo, police are cautioned “not to take law in your own hands”.

“These groups want retaliation and war, please do not give it to them.”
