Lyttelton police take fight to criminals
“Reports of these robberies and theft out of motor vehicles are still continuing, despite warnings to the public.”
Another Lyttelton police station anti-crime and visible policing operation on Friday morning yielded success.
Spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said syringes used for shooting up drugs were confiscated from the homeless living next to Centurion lake.
Miller said the operation was one in a range of crime-reduction and prevention actions the “details of which I will keep secret to protect our strategy”.
“I don’t want to give criminals information about police activity,” he said.
He said crime hotspots, including the Hendrik Verwoerd bridge, West Street near the Gautrain and home affairs offices remained a challenge for the police.

He said handbag-snatchers in those areas were still “at it”.
He said these robberies and theft out of motor vehicles were increasing despite the police warning the public to watch out numerous times.
Miller said the public needed to start acting responsibly by keeping valuable items out of sight.
“These warnings are being sent out repeatedly, also by way of working with Rekord in this regard.”
Miller said another concern was the “unsanitary environment” along the Hennops River due to vagrants living on the riverbank.
“Unfortunately we can’t remove them, we can only do these spot-inspections.”
He said more operations were planned so criminals better beware.
