Lyttelton, Garsfontein and Sunnyside recorded a high number of drunken driving arrests in the Tshwane central cluster at the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt said 72 people were arrested during crime prevention operations in the Moot, Silverton, Villieria, Garsfontein, Lyttelton, Sunnyside and Brooklyn.
“Most were for driving under the influence of alcohol in the Lyttelton, Garsfontein and Sunnyside areas.”

He said the operations were focused on property and drug-related crimes, unlicensed firearms and offences under the road traffic act such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Twenty-two people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 15 for drug-related crimes and 12 for possession of stolen property to name a few.
“Police officers made their presence felt setting up roadblocks, stop and search and raids on various premises.”
“All those arrested will appear in the Hatfield and Pretoria magistrate’s courts respectively on Monday.”
Breedt said the cluster in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies were committed to combating crime and would continue with operations to ensure a heightened police presence at hotspots.

He urged members of the community to report suspicious activities in their residential areas to the police.
