Another death on R511 in Centurion
“Only two out of the three returned to their families that night."
The R511 route in Centurion recently claimed yet another life.
Local resident Elke Haas said three motorcyclists were returning from an outing at Hartbeespoortdam on Sunday 15 April, “but sadly one of them didn’t make it to his home”.
“Only two out of the three returned to their families that night, as the third was involved in a fatal collision on this stretch of the R511,” she wrote in a letter to Gauteng roads and transport MEC Ishmael Vadi.
“The surrounding communities have been bringing this matter to your, and your department’s attention since August 2017.”
Haas said despite meetings held to raise the matter, the communities had not yet heard from the department.
On 16 April, another accident took place on the same stretch of road, but luckily no fatalities resulted.
“What will it take to start implementing solutions? How can we as the community assist to make lives safer,” Haas asked in her letter.
Residents from Laezonia in Centurion, including ward councillor Kingsley Wakelin, have joined forces in a bid to curtail fatal crashes on the road.

They have submitted a petition with more than 1 000 signatures in a bid to get the minister’s attention to upgrade the R511 and R114, also known as Tulip/Mnandi Road.
It is an arterial route linking Sandton, Randburg and Fourways to Pretoria West.
Wakelin vowed to have the roads fixed after Rekord reported about a school bus carrying learners being involved in a crash on the stretch of the road.
Only minor injuries were reported.
In a previous Rekord article, transport spokesperson Melitah Madiba said: “The road is on the department’s maintenance plan for the 2018/19 financial years.”
She did not indicate which roads would be upgraded.
