WATCH: ‘Dangerous’ east road not set for upgrades

DA shadow MEC for transport, Fred Nel said the R50 Delmas road would not be upgraded due to budget constraints.

The provincial government has not allocated a budget for a major road east of Pretoria.

This was confirmed by the DA shadow MEC of transport, Fred Nel.

Nel told a community meeting in Eladruspark on Wednesday that the R50 Delmas road would not be upgraded due to budget constraints.

“Delmas road is not part of the budget for upgrades, but will only be maintained,” he said.

“Major focus in the provincial government will be given to gravel roads.”

This is despite an inspection conducted by Tshwane officials last year that found that the Delmas Road was dangerous.

It had been the scene of numerous accidents due to speeding and poor visibility for motorists.

The team of inspectors highlighted that traffic calming measures were necessary for several other roads in the east.

These included Garsfontein Road, Fisant Street, De Villebois Mareuil Drive and Atterbury.

Nel said the metro would keep a close eye on the maintenance works to ensure that it was done efficiently.

He, however, delivered the good news that R175 million was set aside for Boeing Street/Goede Hoop Road.

“The road is terrible and has been neglected for many years,” he said.

Rekord visited the road and saw how drivers had to duck and dive to avoid multiple patches on the road meant to cover potholes.

The road is riddled with potholes, some of which appeared to have been made worse by mere patchwork over the years.

Nel said the 3-year project would commence in August this year.

He warned motorists of the traffic congestion that would occur during this period.
