ANC lashes Tshwane mayor’s state of city address

Opposition parties debated the mayor’s state of the capital address, citing some issues that they would like him to fast track.

Tshwane mayor has failed to highlight any clear plan to fight crime and unemployment, the ANC has claimed.

Responding to mayor Solly Msimanga’s state of the capital address on Thursday, opposition party ANC’s Mapiti Matsena lambasted the mayor’s address.

“Many of our residents are unemployed and in need of jobs, there is no clear plan for employment, nor does the EPWP in its new form alleviate poverty.”

Matsena said the money that public works employees earned was not enough. “They need better employment with better pay.”

Matsena said the mayor was destabilising the city and in turn, residents were suffering.

ANC councillor Refiloe Kekana said Msimanga’s R2 billion investment was a fallacy and did not exist and that the DA-led administration was flouting supply chain management policies and it was not practising transparency in its finances.

Other opposition parties wanted to know the stance of the mayor on land, citing the recent land invasions and the increase in crime.

EFF councillor Oliver Mabogwana said the mayor had to fast-track the renovations of Schubart Park flats. “It has been six years and there is still no progress in renovations.”

He also said cable theft was a problem that posed a serious threat to the city “as it affected everyone and should be dealt with by making sure that critical city infrastructure is secured”.
