Cable theft continues to plague the north
"Cable theft is the cause of about a third of our power outages costing the City around R130 million per year."
Akasia, north of Pretoria, was without power last week due to continued cable theft, the Tshwane metro has said.
Tshwane MMC for utility services and infrastructure Darryl Moss said multiple areas in Chantelle, in Akasia, were affected.
“A cable between mini substation Boshoff/Asparagus and Ring Main Unit (RMU)/Longmore and another between RMU Sosonike/Longmore and T4 Longmore/Eerste street were stolen.”

He said measures were now in place to combat cable theft.
“Patrols and technology – beams, alarms, cameras – are being stepped up to combat this crime that has a huge negative impact on the residents of our city.”
He urged residents to look out for the thievery and report it to either the SAPS or metro police.
Mayor Solly Msimanga previously slammed cable thieves and buyers of stolen cable.
“Cable theft flourishes because there is a market for this stolen commodity,” he said.
“So buyers too will be subject to the law… they will not be spared.”
He said the metro police cable theft unit was hard at work to ensure the attempt to “destabilise” the city’s administration did not succeed.
